Hi all,

I am currently looking for a great fabric to sew my own raincoat. Any idea and suggestion would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Jana

Hi Jana,

what kind of appearance would you like your new raincoat to have? Are you looking for shiny lightweight or something heavier? The shiny stuff is normally PU-coated and can be purchased from textile shops. You can sew it with machine but if you want it to be waterproof, you should use special tape in the seam, which you melt after sewing with iron from the inside. Heavier raincoat materials may be difficult to buy, very few shops sell them. If you get some the material is probably PVC coated with something like 220 to 400 grams per sq meter.  The price for PU fabric is around 10 to 14 euros per meter in small quantities, width 1,3 to 1,5 meters. If you find a stockist who has some fabric residues on a roll, the price may be totally different.

Viel Gluck with your attempts, tell us how you have succeeded and ofcourse a photo is very much appreciated.
