Hello there - I am new to this site and would love to know how to ensure that photos that I try to upload stay in "portrait" mode and not automatically go to "landscape" (sideways) - i have tried even to load landscape ones up in the hope that they will go to portrait but they still stay landscape :-((((

I’ve had the exact same issue. The way I solved it was by using image editing software (GIMP) that would set the pictures to the right orientation.

You mean readjust them with GIMP before trying to upload them?   (Thanks for the reply btw!)

Yes. When you open the photos up in GIMP, it will prompt you to adjust the orientation.
