Waders photo shoot in the forest
Waders photo shoot in the forest

Hi all

Inspired by Bullseye's suggestions of shooting some wader shot, I decided to go for some extended mudding yesterday. This time I wanted to shoot both video and photos, so I decided to bring my DSLR camera. For the gear to bring it was more difficult as I logically could not bring all and had to choose. The Bullseye quickly went off the shortlist as they are too lose around the foot and thigh. I also really wanted to bring my safety forester 3000 chainsaw waders, but these are extremely heavy and weight would be an issue, so they got off the list as well.

I could have four pair of waders in my rug sack, and as I had decided to wear chest waders to mud site. As I would wear my le chameau neoprene lined chest waders, I decided to put focus on LC thigh waders as well. So my old brown pair (camel logo) and the new green pair of neoprene lined LC deltas went into the rug sack. Another must bring was my extra tall black Gates waders, the last pair was a black rubber no name pair with thick cotton lining, fairly tall and a good tight fitting foot and thigh.

I also put a few rain gear items in the bag to have a more varied photo shoot, on top I had to pack my photo tripod and all the photo equipment. So at the end the rug sack was at least 35 kilos or more, but what don't we all do for some good mudding. And after all, it would be a good fitness training ☺

Before leaving home I wore a thick woollen sweater, the LC chest waders, my yellow HH Nusfjord rain bibs on top and a yellow rain jacket.

I walked to the mud spot in the forest without meeting a single person on this quiet Sunday morning, not that it would have mattered. The weight of the gear for sure caused a sweat, and I did have to take a break before arriving at my desired spot.

Arrived at the mud spot I setup up the photo equipment and unpacked all my gear and wore the waders one by one. I finished off with mudding in the chest waders, first only chesties in full view and then chest waders with the HH Nusfjord bibs on top.

The mud on the spot was the typical black forest mud which is common here. It was surprisingly sticky as I expected it to be more watery in this wet time of year. And this mud hole is actually a small natural spring, so its always wet even in the driest of summers. As you will see on the videos I get stuck a few times and lost a wader, luckily without getting my sock messy ☺ this happened exactly at the 5 minute video cut out of the camera, so you will sadly only see the loss and not the recovery of the wader.

So I did manage to shoot six videos and plenty of of photos as well, the sun was killing me as it appeared and disappeared causing havoc for the camera settings, in hindsight I should just have shot on auto in such a varied setting
